BERNARD DESCAMPS 1947
"Madagascar, Sarondrano", 2009. Photography. Period silver print on baryta paper, made by the author, signed, dated and titled in pencil on the back by the author. Image: 27 x 27 cm; sheet: 32 x 30 cm. Bernard Descamps (French, born in 1947) explores photography in all its states, from reportage to landscape, through the city and its colours. He works essentially on the choice of framing for the shooting, in square format, going against the academic rules of composition. His main works are in black and white, particularly on Africa. His work is part of large collections, such as that of the Stedelijk Museum (Amsterdam), the Bibliothèque nationale de France, the Centre Pompidou and the Leverkusen Museum (Germany). The five prints on offer are among the most emblematic images of his 50 years of photography, travel and contemplation: from Japan to Madagascar, from Mali to Iceland, not forgetting a furtive and mysterious vision on the quays of Paris.
