HENRI CARTIER-BRESSON 1908-2004
Mathilde Camhi and the mannequin, Valencia, Spain, 1932-1933. Photograph. Silver print from the period, annotated on the back. 23.7 x 16.7 cm. Enclosed is an autograph typed letter from Henri Cartier-Bresson confirming the date the photograph was taken. Provenance: Family of Mathilde Camhi. At the beginning of the 30's, Henri Cartier-Bresson decided to go on the road, not only to travel, but also to photograph. His friend André Pieyre de Mandiargues would later say that it was during these trips to Europe that Cartier-Bresson became Cartier-Bresson. In Valencia, he photographed his friend Mathilde Camhi, whom he had met at the André Lhote Academy in Paris and with whom he shared a certain infatuation for surrealist research. It was in Spain that he made some of his most powerful images.
