After having served in the Austrian army during the Revolution, Alexandre Laborde (1773-1842), was attached to the embassy of Lucien Bonaparte in Madrid in 1800-1801 as an archaeologist. He visited the Iberian Peninsula, a part of Europe still little known at the time, and undertook to give a historical and iconographic description of it. To assist him, he had a team of artists at his service who drew the monuments while he collected valuable documentation on the folklore, art, archaeology and architecture of Spain. Dedicated to Manuel Godoy, this ambitious publication was interrupted by the outbreak of the Spanish War in 1808. Volumes II and III thus appeared in 1811 and 1812, and Laborde was not able to complete his work until 1820. Palau 128975; Foulché-Delbosc 226 A; Farinelli III, p. 12 "viaje muy admirado y muy leido, magnificamente ilustrado". Pertus p. 287. Very beautiful specimen of all freshness. Ex-Libris René Cluzel, engraved by François Righi.
