MONTHERLANT (Henry de). - Lot 51
MONTHERLANT (Henry de).
The Bestiaries. Paris, Gallimard, 1947. In-12. Publishing cardboard after Paul Bonet's model. Joint: SIPRIOT (Pierre). Montherlant. Drawings. Paris, Copernicus, 1979. In-4, publisher's canvas, dust jacket (11 pp., 87 ff.). Original edition, containing the reproduction of drawings by Montherlant, most of them bullfighting. Pertus n°18 p. 362. Montherlant confesses without detours his fascination for bullfighting. In 1911, he kills young bulls in a private plaza near Burgos, and his name appears for the first time in French and Spanish newspapers. The noise of this activity having come back to his parents, they forbid him to return to Spain where he will return only in 1923, then practising bullfighting in the farms. Les Bestiaires, although written in Paris during the summer of 1925, owes much to these youthful experiences. In December of the same year, he will be wounded rather severely after having received a blow of horn from a bull during a training session. Pertus 360.
