He opened his studio in Yokohama in 1883. His business strategy was clear from his first advertisement: to sell souvenir albums of views and costumes to foreign residents and visitors. His photographs were used to illustrate the book "Japan" described and illustrated by the Japanese of Captain Francis Brinkley. He made photographs of the interiors of Nikko's temples that could be purchased in his store. The uncolored images probably date from the early years of his activity in Yokohama.Bibliography: Terry Bennett "Photography in Japan, 1853-1912" Tuttle Publishing, 2006, p.198-202.
