PALESTINE - AUGUSTE SALZMANN (1824-1872) - Lot 182
PALESTINE - AUGUSTE SALZMANN (1824-1872) "Jerusalem, Judaic and Roman fragments, 1854. Photograph. Print on salted paper mounted on cardboard, caption typed under the mount, mention "Gide et J.Baudry, éditeurs." on the left under the image and "Imp. Photogr. De Blanquart-Evrard à Lille" on the right under the image. Image: 23,2 x 31 cm; mount: 45 x 60 cm Born in a rich Alsatian family, Salzmann first studied painting. He was then one of the first to use photography in the study of ancient sites. He exhumed remains in Rhodes in collaboration with Alfred Biliotti, archaeologist and British consul. Salzmann concentrated his views on details (vegetal friezes, fragments of statues) giving a raw and ephemeral impression. He returned to Jerusalem twice in the 1860s. This series was the first of a long journey that would take him to Algeria, Egypt and Greece. A print of the same image is in the Metropolitan Museum, New York (2005.100.373.74).
