Gustave Le Gray (1820-1884) - Lot 243
Gustave Le Gray (1820-1884) View of the Seine, the bridges of Paris, the Louvre and the equestrian statue of Henri IV, view of the pavilions on the Pont Neuf square, 1857 Photograph. Albumen print mounted under matting. The print is taken from the Place du Pont Neuf above the Square de Vert-Galant at the tip of the Île de la Cité, which houses the equestrian statue of Henri IV by François-Frédéric Lemot. The Vert-Galant swimming school, located in the foreground on the right, was one of the main schools in Paris, along with the one on the Pont Saint-Nicolas (in front of the Louvre) and those located on both sides of the Pont-Neuf. From 1877 onwards, and in view of the increase in river traffic, no authorization for bathing was granted, which contributed to the decline of these "bathing" places. The print also shows the Palais de l'Industrie, built in 1855. The pavilions of Flore and the Gallery at the waterfront have not yet been rebuilt by Hector-Martin Lefuel (1863-1868). The Solferino Bridge, absent from the view, was rebuilt between 1858 and 1859, and another print of this image is preserved at the Metropolitan Museum in New York under the reference 2005.100.628.
