CARCASSONNE
Panoramas of the citadel of Carcassonne, castle and city walls, cathedral, after the restoration by Viollet-le-Duc, ca. 1890. Photographs. 2 albumen prints and 3 panoramas composed of 2 or 3 albumen prints, 3 of them mounted on cardboard. The restoration of the city of Carcassonne was one of the most ambitious projects of the 19th century. Initiated thanks to the action of Jean-Pierre Cros-Meyrevieille, a French historian and archaeologist, work to save the city began in 1844. It was directed by Eugène Viollet-le-Duc until 1889. This restoration will start with the protection of the Saint Nazaire basilica as a historical monument in 1840 and will extend to the whole ramparts in 1862. The most important works will concentrate on the restoration of the roofs of the towers of the ramparts and the hourds of the castle which will be almost entirely rebuilt. After Viollet-le-Duc's death, two other architects, Paul Boeswillwald, his pupil, and Paul Nodet, continued the restoration.
