MONTAGNE "The Janssen Observatory at the summit of Mont Blanc - Scientific Mission G. Le Cadet September 1902". Photograph. Vintage silver print enhanced on the image, mounted on cardboard, captioned below the image. Image: 35 x 38.5 cm; mount: 48 x 59.5 cm.Georges Le Cadet, an astronomer, attended Louis and Auguste Lumière at the École de la Martinière. After graduating from the Beaux-Arts de Lyon, he obtained two degrees in mathematics and physics and then defended a thesis on the study of the electric field of the atmosphere. A great sportsman, he worked at the ephemeral observatory created by Jules Janssen on Mont Blanc. Janssen, after having climbed it for the first time in 1890, wrote: "I know that people will oppose me the difficulty of building a similar construction on such a high summit, where one can only reach with great difficulty and where violent storms often prevail. All these difficulties are real, but they are not insurmountable. It is the opinion which resulted by me from my ascent." The Observatory is finally inaugurated in 1893. Essentially devoted to astronomical research, it was used during 10 years. The mission Le Cadet of 1902 is part of this scientific epic.
