VICTOR VANIER - Lot 333
VICTOR VANIER Piperie Kriegslazaret, Gambier house in Givet, Ardennes, ca.1880. Photographs. 6 albumin prints mounted on cardboard, captioned on the mount, mention "Photographie V.VANIER, Givet" under the image.Images: 16 x 22 cm; mounts: 34 x 40 cm The Gambier house was the largest clay pipe factory in the world for several decades. Located in Givet in the Ardennes, it closed in the first half of the 20th century because of the competition of the wooden pipe and the cigarette. Rimbaud quotes it in his poem "Oraison du soir" in 1871: "I saw sitting, like an angel in the hands of a barber, clutching a mug with strong grooves, the hypogastrium and the neck arched, a Gambier".
