"I was obliged to reveal the latent figure that lay in each image. The photograph became the raw material, the starting point of mutations and transmutations... The paper on the wall, the suspenders on the sofa being the ultimate remains of the photo. Other "delivered" forms became women-guitars, women-violets, women-mandolin.... From the photographic image to the engraving the realism lost its rights to the benefit of the onirism. The photography has sometimes vanished. Sometimes some debris survived; a piece of quivering breast, a face in shortcut, a thigh, an arm. Enshrined in the graphics, it is to our obsessions, to our dreams that they give the brightness of the moment and the breath of reality." Brassaï.
