ILSE BING 1899-1998
Study for the perfume "Shocking" by Elsa Schiaparelli, 1941. Photograph. Vintage silver print, mounted on cardboard, signed and dated on the image. Framed. Image: 33.2 x 26 cm; mount: 35.5 x 28 cm Provenance: Sale Ilse Bing, Millon-Cornette de Saint-Cyr, Paris, November 16, 2009. In 1937, Elsa Schiaparelli launched her perfume Shocking, whose bottle and packaging were designed by the Argentinean-born artist Leonor Fini. The bottle is shaped like a dressmaker's mannequin, with a tape measure around the neckline sealed by a monogrammed "S" patch and small flowers around the neck. The shape of the mannequin is inspired by the curves of the actress Mae West, the Hollywood sex symbol of the time.
