INGI (Louis Ingigliardi, dit) 1915-2008
MUSIC "Farewell Symphony" by Haydnthe last musicians, December 1959 Photograph Vintage glossy silver print, signed, titled, archive number 1213-8 and dated in ink and stamped "PHOTO INGI" on the back 19,5 x 22,5 cm This famous symphony was composed in Esterháza (Hungary) in 1772, in a very particular context: the prince has just forbidden the musicians' families to join them in his palace, whereas he intends to prolong his stay there Haydn, having always kept his facetious character, takes charge of writing a symphony which will make it clear, in music, that the musicians are in a hurry to leave the place and to return to their home in Eisenstadt (in Austria): the symphony ends with the staggered departure of all the musicians, leaving only two violins The prince, after hearing the symphony, is said to have let his musicians go the very next day The evocative title was finally given to the symphony in Paris in 1784
