The sewing machine, Kuwait, 1955. Photograph. Silver print ca. 1970, stamped by the author and annotated in pencil on the back. Hazan, Montpellier, 2020, 4th cover and p.59 "I waited for this woman for five years. She had escaped me one evening in December 1950 in Marrakech, for lack of sufficient light and above all... camera, and I was enraged at this missed photo. It was in Kuwait that I found her, the first photo of my first reel, on the afternoon of my arrival. What a joy! It was by a sleight of hand that I was able to conceal and keep this film, which the pious, courteous but determined male Kuwaitis wanted to be handed over in the name of the Pleven law adapted from the Koran. Despite this amusing little rouletabillesque context, this image is much more of an ancient statuary than an anecdote".
