Campany David
A Handful of Dust. Mack, 2017. This book revisits the history of the 20th century through the eyes of David Campany, charting a visual journey through some of the era's most unlikely images. Let's assume that the modern era began in October 1922. A small French avant-garde magazine publishes a photograph of a glass plate covered in dust. The photograph is by Man Ray, the glass by Marcel Duchamp. It is first described as 'a view taken from an aeroplane'; then it is called 'Élevage de poussière'. The image is abstract; it is also realistic. It is a work of art, it is a document. It provokes and intrigues. Cameras must be kept away from dust, but dust is still extremely photogenic. Paperback, new in blister. Publisher: Mack
