Cuisset Thibault
French countryside. Steidl, 2019. Thibaut Cuisset (1958-2017), took a scientific baccalaureate before trying his hand at medical studies. But the temptation of the FEMIS, which focused his passion for cinema, was to steer him towards images and photography. It was training under the photographer Michel Séméniako that led him more surely towards the still image and the practice of photography from 1982 onwards. Since then, and for more than thirty years, Thibaut Cuisset's photographic work has unfolded in successive campaigns around the question of landscape and territory across many countries and especially in France, thanks to grants and institutional or private commissions. With the contemporary acuity of an eye worthy of the American photographers of the New Topographics, Thibaut Cuisset has seized on the singularity of French landscapes and countryside, without picturesqueness or nostalgia. His images show that there's nothing fixed about a territory, that it's the result of history and of multiple interventions that are always active, whether geological, climatic, economic, political, social or simply human. A typology free of any idea of inventory or anecdote, their album composes a sensitive atlas of today's world. This autonomous work by a great artist is the faithful and precise tribute of an attentive traveler to the great diversity of the French landscape... Publisher: Steidl
