Tra l'altro (1976-81). Mack, 2020. Selected from the Guido Guidi archives by Marcello Galvani, this book presents 94 color photographs taken with small-format cameras between 1976 and 1981. For the most part previously unpublished, these images form an ideal link between two well-known phases of Guidi's work. After the irreverent black-and-white snapshots of the early 1970s, this series marks Guidi's gradual turn towards color work, which he began studying in the early 1980s with a large-format 8x10 camera. We already see here the photographer's growing fascination with his everyday landscape, including vernacular buildings, ordinary people and visual accidents, but taken with a keen, peripatetic eye that questions the possibility of capturing the flow of experience and the notion of photographic time. "Tra l'altro" - which translates as elsewhere, incidentally, or among others - acts as a historical moment of transition in Guidi's visual thinking, but also, in his own words, as "passing observations" and a means of "making contact" with the outside world.
