Hauser Thomas
Girls seen. Editions Patrick Rémy, 2021. "Girls Seen is an exploration from another angle. If you look at the photos as a series, the overriding impression is that you're looking at a large archive. In their arrangement, a large number of the portraits bear some of the photographic aspects common to scientific or bureaucratic images, such as those we know from the fields of medicine and the legal system, but also from ehtnology, or from nineteenth- and twentieth-century colonial photography. This becomes evident in the Knees series, in which the models sit on a chair, half-naked or dressed as described above. Seated in profile, they adopt stiff upright positions, as if fixed. The same effect is achieved when the model, naked except for a pair of black nylon briefs and Doc Martens, stares straight into the camera lens. There's no other way to put it: such arrangements of anthropometric aspects used in photographic recordings enter into a disturbing alliance with fetishistic disposition. Here, the model is thought of, but only for a single session, while the photographer submits to the austere photographic frame over a period of many years. Like a death sentence. Thomas Hauser's portraits are light years away from the ubiquitous, transient pictorial environment that surrounds us. They are also far removed from the photographic idea of another, lighter, more liberated (?) attitude towards the physical. In the way these pictures are able to create immediacy and captivate the viewer, they are masterful. excerpt from the preface by Annette Weber; texts by Heather Palmer Welesko and Annette Weber, b.w. photos.
