JEAN-PAUL SARTRE - Lot 244
JEAN-PAUL SARTRE "Jean-Paul Sartre d'accord avec le F.L.N.", 1960. Image: 15.8 x 13 cm; sheet: 18.2 x 13 cm During the trial of the Jeanson network, Sartre sends a letter in his defense. The letter contained the famous phrase: "If Jeanson had asked me to carry suitcases or shelter Algerian militants (...) I would have done so without hesitation". In fact, Roland Dumas, then a lawyer for the F.L.N., would reveal 50 years later in his memoirs that he was the author of the letter. Sartre, at a conference in Brazil, had assured him that he would ratify it. Noting the extent of the controversy, he reproached the lawyer for the form of the sentence on his return to France. Bibliography: Roland Dumas, Coups et blessures, 50 ans de secrets partagés avec François Mitterrand, Cherche-Midi, 2011, 528p.
