Richard Ranft (1862-1931)
The Masked Ball, 1899
Original etching (Eau-forte & Aquatint) on Vergé d'Arches paper (Arches watermark in lower margin).
An edition of only 50 or 60 copies is highly probable. Very rare!
Hand-signed in the lower right-hand margin and signed in the plate in the lower left-hand corner.
Estampe Nouvelle monogram affixed to the plate, lower left.
Dimensions:
+Sheet size: 44 x 50.5 cm / 17.3 x 19.8 in.
+Image dimensions: 36 x 44 cm / 14.1 x 17.3 in.
Condition : In overall good condition, with light handling creases at the edges and some minor staining in the margins. The paper is slightly curled with a few notable soft creases on the upper corners. An otherwise very clean image, with beautiful colors.
Published by L'Estampe Nouvelle, an art print publication founded by Eugène Rodrigues-Henriques (known as Erastène Ramiro) and Roger Marx in 1897, for just 50 subscribers at the time.
Each print run never exceeded 65 proofs, including 50 copies for L'Estampe Nouvelle subscribers, and only 10 copies for the public. Consequently, all works on paper and etchings are very rare. In July 1899, this work of art by Richard Ranft was published. A collector's etching!
Reference in Bailly-Herzberg #272 & #355.
