Simon Duarte was the son of a Portuguese merchant working in Antwerp, and may have been the brother of the portraitist
Salomon Duarte, a portrait painter at the court of Heidelberg. The meticulous detail and treatment of the rocks
in the foreground, as well as the perspective towards a bluish mountain landscape, bring our painting
those of his Antwerp contemporary and landscape painter, Philips Augustyn Immenraet.
