FRANÇOIS AUBERT 1829-1906 "Three crosses on the Cerro de las - Lot 147
FRANÇOIS AUBERT 1829-1906 "Three crosses on the Cerro de las Campanas", Tomb of Emperor Maximilian, Mexico, June 1867. Photograph. Albumen print signed in the negative. Image: 16.4 x 22.2 cm; sheet: 17.2 x 23.3 cm The images produced by François Aubert to document Maximilian's execution during the Mexican War are the first photographic evidence of a king's "martyrdom". Sent from Mexico in the summer of 1867, reproduced in Mexico and France, banned by Napoleon III and subsequently clandestinely distributed, these photographs are frequently cited as one of the "visual sources" for Manet's painting "The Execution of Emperor Maximilian".
