"Surfaces, Depths" is a representative selection of Thomas Ruff's work, spanning a period that already spans some 25 years, with projects ranging from portraits and interiors to images of telescopes and space probes and "night vision" photography. Ruff incorporates an extremely wide range of everyday subjects into his experiments - people, architecture, planets, the Internet - and subjects them to all forms of photographic technology, so that his work often seems to embody art history as it develops. Ruff has a particular fascination with photographic techniques that seem to erase or leave out the artist's hand, techniques often designed for military or scientific purposes. In a recent series entitled "Zycles", Ruff constructs his images using mathematical formulas and computer technology, transforming two-dimensional surfaces into a three-dimensional space of vector graphics. "Surfaces and Depths" focuses on 10 of Ruff's 18 projects to address this particular and abiding preoccupation with artistic detachment and the polarities of seeing surface and depth in the construction of images. In so doing, it provides the most comprehensive assessment to date of the work of this tireless innovator.
