Images: 14 x 22.3 to 19.8 x 25.7 cm; mounts: 24.2 x 32.1 to 32 x 48.7 cm Aléo is a little-known primitive photographer. For ten years or so, he produced extremely fine views, notably of the Côte d'Azur and Corsica. Introduced to photography by Alphonse Davanne, he won a medal at the London World's Fair in 1862, then became his partner in the mid-1860s. The importance given to vegetation and the unique choice of black and white are two points in common between the two men, even if Aléo's views are much more often animated. In their association, the Nice prints are more the work of Aléo, who knew the region well, having settled there in 1850 before moving to the Meudon area. Also producing high-quality stereoscopic views, mainly sold in Menton at Pascal Amarante's bazaar, Aléo finally abandoned the medium in the mid-1870s. He sailed for the United States, remarried and became a glass importer. The important lot presented here includes large prints, in particular a rare portrait of Pifferaro, an Italian itinerant musician, and two seascapes of a sailboat leaving the port of Villefranche-sur-Mer, one with a tight frame. The villas of Nice are also captured, with compositions that play on the vegetation, as well as an intimate view of an alley featuring two boys, one dressed in an elegant suit and the other in a work top and cap. The delicate composition is delineated by a cart to the right of the image, while a basket sits carelessly in the foreground. The quality of these prints is reminiscent of those kept at the Société de Géographie and printed by Davanne, although many of the photographs in our lot are not kept there.
