CHARLES HIPPOLYTE AUBRY 1811-1877 Peonies, ca.1864. Photogra - Lot 25
CHARLES HIPPOLYTE AUBRY 1811-1877 Peonies, ca.1864. Photograph. Albumen print signed in the negative. 25.5 x 35 cm A draftsman, Charles Aubry (1811-1877) decided in 1864 to build up a photographic collection by capturing plants and flowers. The beginnings were difficult for the photographer, as he was supported neither by the State nor by art teachers, who preferred old models to the new medium. Nevertheless, he managed to exploit his collection of around 200 images until 1870, notably at Gobelins and Tiffany. The apparent spontaneity of these photographs, reminiscent of Talbot's "The Pencil of Nature", is in fact feigned. In fact, the compositions are carefully thought out, as the time required to prepare the collodion plates and expose them (around 45 minutes) oblige the photographer to think ahead. To enhance the legibility of the final image, Aubry sometimes dipped his plants in plaster to reinforce their plasticity, but also to get around the negative's sensitivity to the color green. Representative of his work, the large formats presented here are particularly warm in tone.
