GUSTAVE LE GRAY 1820-1884 Large Wave. This no. 17. (Sète), s - Lot 71
GUSTAVE LE GRAY 1820-1884 Large Wave. This no. 17. (Sète), spring 1857. Photographic print. Albumen print, from two collodion glass negatives. 33.7 x 40.3 cm This icon of photography struck a chord in its day, when most photographers were unable to properly expose landscape and sky in the same photograph. Le Gray solved the problem by printing two negatives on the same sheet of paper, one for the sea and the other for the sky. The critic Henri d'Audigier, observing the work in the photographer's studio, described it as "an enormous wave breaking against a large black reef, so well launched, so impetuous, so bubbling, that one would be tempted to step back to avoid being hit by its furious momentum".
Provenance: Collection François Puaux; to current owner ca. 1983-1985.
Other prints are in the collections of the Bibliothèque Nationale de France (RESERVE FOL-EO-13 (3)), the Musée d'Orsay (PHO 1985 127), the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (1976.646) and the Museum of Modern Art, New York (350.1989).
