Edith Mannoni - Quimper earthenware / Revolutionary earthenw - Lot 149
Edith Mannoni - Quimper earthenware / Revolutionary earthenware / Talking earthenware Quimper earthenware (1998)
Iridescent fairy, shrouded in mystery, Quimper earthenware could only have been born in a land of legends. A sorceress, it enchants the heart but baffles the mind. Which Quimper earthenware? It's also stoneware and pottery! Its origins drown in the mists of time. Popular, dapper, erudite, artistic, it takes on a peasant allure and dares to reach the heights of art, rivaling - in a unique case - easel painting. Another exclusive: the only one of its kind in France, it celebrates the most typical son of its beautiful province, in the process of acquiring worldwide fame, beloved by its compatriots and cherished by tourists: the inescapable Petit Breton!
Revolutionary earthenware (1999)
Under the blows of competition from porcelain and fine earthenware, traditional earthenware collapsed, at the same time as the old structures known as the Ancien Régime. France enters the Revolution. It shook the world. And, in the process, it awakened good old-fashioned popular earthenware. Stunned, collectors in the 19th century discovered a very special sector: that of so-called revolutionary earthenware. Like the Revolution, they were strange and, like it, popular. But that's not all. At once idyllic and philosophical, overflowing with tenderness and enthusiastic about new ideas, imbued with a charming naïveté that doesn't shy away from almost metaphysical concepts, they take us on a caracolizing and astonishing panoramic vision of the Revolution. Indeed, for a population as modest as it is passionate, they had some very curious messages to illustrate.
Les faïces parlantes (1999)
Les Faiences Parlantes A trail that sounds like a ditty and a riddle, that jumps from a patron saint to a political caricature, from a rebus to a gallant couplet, from a great story to a humorous one, traces a curious hole in the vast and varied realm of French Faience. Instructive at times, funny at others, this stroll takes a special look at a number of factories, revealing an unexpected aspect of our very own heritage. massin 1998-1999
