This album includes large views by Beato taken in 1863 before the destruction of his studio. Finely enhanced, they include the spectacular portrait of Koboto Santaro, commander-in-chief of the shogun's army, as well as two geishas observing the "Grecian Bend" fashion, which spread to Europe thanks to the tea pavilion erected at the 1867 World's Fair. The latter consisted in reproducing the gracefully reclining postures of ancient Greek statues. Sutton's photographs, also taken around 1863, are striking in their quality, particularly the portrait of the last shogun, Tokugawa Yoshinobu.
