Güler Ara Istanbul. Editions du pacifique, 2009. Photographi - Lot 118
Güler Ara Istanbul. Editions du pacifique, 2009. Photographic testimony to daily life in Turkey's cultural capital from the 1940s to the 1980s. The subjects chosen by the artist reflect, with a sensitive, poetic aestheticism, the oscillation between tradition and modernity in this city that was once Byzantium, then Constantinople. These splendid black-and-white images are presented with a previously unpublished text by Orhan Pamuk, another great figure of Turkish culture. Both men were born in Istanbul, and in their youth wanted to become painters. Here, each in his own way, they depict their native city, capturing its melancholy soul through images and words. Faces of the 20th century. 100 portraits of celebrities (2012). The collection presented here is not just a social repertoire, a selection of remarkable and famous faces; it is, in a sense, a chronicle of our culture from the 20th to the 21st century, a chronicle of the men and women who have shaped our imagination through words, forms, sounds and images. {...}. Flipping through the book, contemplating the faces Güler has portrayed, we recognize the eyes that have taught us to see, the hands that have taught us to touch, the lips that have lent us the vocabulary through which we can reflect on who we are and where we are today...".
