McMillan David Growth and Degrowth: Pripiat and the Chernoby - Lot 169
McMillan David Growth and Degrowth: Pripiat and the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone. Steidl, 2019. Since 1994, David McMillan has visited the Chernobyl exclusion zone twenty-two times. As a teenager, he was deeply impressed by Nevil Shute's novel The Last Shore (1957), an apocalyptic picture of humanity annihilated by nuclear war. During all his visits, McMillan documented the town of Pripiat, 3 km from the power plant and one of the places hardest hit by the disaster. Standing but emptied of its population, it has become the symbol of the irradiated city, a Pompeii of the nuclear age. McMillan has explored the evacuated zones, where nature has reclaimed its rightful place over the built-up area, and where the only people to be seen are the occasional scientist measuring the effects of radioactivity. Here, he delivers a sobering, powerful meditation on the fragility of technocratic civilization. Hardcover with dust jacket, text in French. Brand new, in original shrink-wrap. Steidl
