ALPS - AIMÉ CIVIALE 1821-1893 - Lot 285
ALPS - AIMÉ CIVIALE 1821-1893 Panorama of the Bernese Oberland from the Staldhorn, ca.1865. Photographs. 4 photogravures from 1882 forming a panorama, one signed in the negative, caption on mount. Image: 34.5 x 102 cm; mount: 51 x 116 cm Aimé Civiale was one of the pioneers of scientific photography applied to mountain geography. At the end of the 1850s, he began a program of systematic inventories of the Alps using this medium, which he continued for around ten years. He abandoned the collodion technique, which was difficult to use in the mountains, in favor of Gustave le Gray's waxed paper negative.
