Aimé Civiale was one of the pioneers of scientific photography applied to mountain geography. At the end of the 1850s, he began a program of systematic inventories of the Alps using this medium, which he continued for around ten years. He abandoned the collodion technique, which was difficult to use in the mountains, in favor of Gustave le Gray's waxed paper negative.
