ANTOINE SAMUEL ADAM-SALOMON 1818-1881 - Lot 134
ANTOINE SAMUEL ADAM-SALOMON 1818-1881 Portrait of a woman (Franz Liszt entourage), ca.1855. Photograph. Salt paper print, conservation mount. Image: 28 x 21 cm; mount: 48 x 36.7 cm Lamartine changed his mind about photography when he observed portraits by Adam-Salomon in the mid-1860s. After some acerbic criticism, he made a spectacular about-turn on the medium in the 37th interview of his Cours de Littérature. He writes: "Since we have admired the marvellous portraits captured in a burst of sunlight by Adam Salomon (...) we will no longer say: it's a craft; it's an art, it's better than an art, it's a solar phenomenon where the artist collaborates with the sun". Davanne also praised the high quality of his portraits, an argument in favor of his vision of artistic photography. In his opinion, it should reflect the photographer's feelings, as opposed to what he calls "portrait machines", i.e. Disdéri and his ilk.
