Approx. 20 x 25 cm With the exception of a few views, this album is composed of photographs by Usui Shusaburo. Shusaburo was active for around ten years between the mid-1860s and mid-1870s, mainly taking landscapes. His portraits, with their recognizable style although often confused with Stillfried's, are presented here in a very fine state of preservation. Although some of them have already been catalogued (Terry Bennett, Old Japanese Photographs, p.156), several are highly unusual and reveal the artist's great skill as a portraitist. In addition to these rare portraits, the album includes Kuichi's famous 1873 depictions of Empress Haruko and Emperor Meiji.
