Nelly's studied photography in Germany, alongside Hugo Erfurt and Franz Fiedler. Opening her studio in Athens in 1924, her avant-garde photos of Mona Paeva at the Parthenon were published by L'Illustration in France and caused a scandal.
Her classical education and admiration for ancient Greek civilization influenced her photographic work on the Acropolis. During the Second World War, she moved to the United States, where she remained for twenty-seven years. The Metropolitan Museum in New York bought an important series of her photographs of the Acropolis. In 1966, she returned to Greece and presented her work in numerous exhibitions, including "Nelly's: The Body, The Light and Ancient Greece", which was the official Greek entry at the Barcelona Cultural Olympiad in 1992.
