"Bazaar or souk in Aleppo, Syria, 1972. One of the bazaar's typical streets. The Aleppo bazaar, many parts of which were built as early as the 13th century, is one of the most picturesque and fascinating in the Middle East. Located around the Djami el-Kébir mosque, it covers a large part of the ancient city center with a maze of narrow streets with vaulted ceilings, the only daylight penetrating through tiny square windows. As always in the East, the streets are filled with merchants selling fabrics, silverware, carpets, etc."
