NORMANDY - ILDEFONSE ROUSSET 1817-1879 Album presenting a se - Lot 273
NORMANDY - ILDEFONSE ROUSSET 1817-1879 Album presenting a set of views of Normandy by Ildefonse Rousset, ca.1863. Children in a farmyard, death of a pig, woman with a headdress holding a bucket, old woman having breakfast, children in front of the barn, woman with a basket entering the farmyard, couple resting under the trees near the tub, Norman family, village school, child reading, in a courtyard, one smoking a pipe, children in the forest, in front of the shed. Photographs. Album with 13 albumen prints, captioned in pencil under the images. Restoration to one. 17.5 x 12.5 cm Provenance: collection of painter Édouard Detaille (1848-1912); by descent. Ildefonse Rousset is well known to enthusiasts for the nature photographs of the two books he illustrated, "Tour de Marne" in 1864 and "Bois de Vincennes" in 1865. The prints presented here come from the studio of the painter Édouard Detaille and date from the early days of his work, probably in 1863. They clearly reveal the influence of Hippolyte Bayard. These views, taken in a rural setting, against a backdrop of barns and farm buildings, these arrangements of tools and objects used in the rural world, these thematic settings of peasants in working clothes, these groups of children posing before the lens, form meticulously prepared "tableaux".
