Hers François Recit. With the collaboration of Jean Francois - Lot 130
Hers François Recit. With the collaboration of Jean Francois Chevrier. Hercher, 1983. A book of photographs that reads like a novel. A fiction that uses images to tell the story of an adventure and translate a theoretical reflection on photography. François Hers has systematically sought to determine the function of photography in our society. He does this by establishing a very special relationship with the people or things he photographs: he demands, provokes a reaction and, in response, obtains a strong tension that he stages, he obtains gestures that take the place of words. His presence in a hospital, an art school, a factory, a press or advertising agency becomes a happening, a performance, a provocative interaction between participants. This book blends personal experience and considerations with astonishingly realistic photographs, because François Hers never hesitates to seek out the image of his obsessions wherever it is to be found. We find him with the police, alone in Patagonia, in the Portuguese revolution, in French society or in the streets, homes and parties of his native Belgium. The text, which in its final form belongs to Jean-François Chevrier, explains nothing. But it was the text that served as the thread through which the images were edited, and the two combine to paint a convincing portrait of a great photographer. They describe the encounters and milestones of a career that began in the 1960s and continued with his participation in the Viva group in 1972, followed by books, exhibitions, loves and the choices of an eventful life. Finally, this book presents the originality of François Hers' attitude to contemporary photography. He considers it both an art and a profession. When asked if he thinks he has to choose, he replies that it's a false problem, and that this contradiction is the good fortune of a modern art that is part of a very old culture.
