His name is less well known than those of Boubat, Doisneau or Ronis. Yet he was one of the great humanist photographers of twentieth-century France. Roger Schall photographed Paris from top to bottom, day and night, capturing celebrities in their intimacy (Marlene Dietrich, Colette), documenting the great figures of fashion (Schiaparelli, Lanvin, Rochas), and producing reports on society (Deauville, London, New York). In 1935, on the maiden voyage of the liner Normandie, he shared a cabin with Blaise Cendrars, which set him up as a man... Under the age of 30, in 1934, in defiance of the economic crisis, he and his brother set up a press agency with up to fifteen employees.
