LEWIS HINE 1874-1940 - Lot 18
LEWIS HINE 1874-1940 Addie Card, age 12, spinner, North Carolina, Cotton Mills, 1910. Photograph. Silver print ca.1960, stamped "George Eastman House" and captioned in pencil on the back. Image: 21.2 x 17.3 cm; sheet: 25.2 x 20.4 cm Lewis Hine wanted to create an image "more real than reality itself". Now recognized as one of the pioneers of social photography, Hine wrote in 1933: "It is in the name of expressive force and not of emphasis that I select the most striking faces for my industrial portraits, because this is the only way to convey my conviction that, in the end, the most important thing is the human spirit. I wanted to show what needed to be corrected. I wanted to show what needed to be appreciated. We need light, lots of light."
