ROGER SCHALL 1904-1995 - Lot 43
ROGER SCHALL 1904-1995 Traffic jam, Paris, 1929. Photograph. Silver print ca. 2015, dry-stamped by the Estate, signed by the rightful owners and the printer and numbered 1/15 in pencil on the back. Image: 25.2 x 36.3 cm; sheet: 29.5 x 39.7 cm Born in 1904 in Nancy into a family of photographers, Roger Schallapprends from adolescence the gestures of the trade with his father Émile. In 1925, during his military service, he joined the French army's photographic section in Lebanon. On his return, the acquisition of a Leica, followed by a Rolleiflex, marked a turning point: Roger Schall left the studio to capture reality on the spot. His spontaneous approach, influenced by the New Vision, born of the principles developed by the Bahaus school, would never leave him. Roger Schall has turned photography into an art form in its own right, with a tender, poetic vision of the world conveyed through his surprising camera angles and framing choices.
