"The End of the Game", Paul Hamlyn, London, 1965.
Book. 1st edition hardback with dust jacket, 256p. Minor wear to dust jacket.
28.5 x 21 cm
Peter Beard was born in New York in 1938. Having read "Out of Africa" in his youth, he went to Denmark to meet the author, befriended her, photographed her and eventually bought a property in Kenya, near Karen Blixen's old farm. Here, Peter Beard developed his own style of photography, both fashion and wildlife, and created a unique form of expression with his magnificent visual "diaries". At the same time, Beard became a fervent but pessimistic defender of nature. His masterpiece is undoubtedly his book on Africa, "The End of the Game", published in 1965. A major publication, "The End of the Game" combines Peter Beard's essential text with his remarkable photographs, which together record the extermination of tens of thousands of elephants, rhinos and hippos on Kenya's Tsavo plains and in Ugandan parks in the 1960s. This book is Beard's masterwork, a powerful and poignant testimony to the ravages of human intervention in Africa.
