You need to establish a positive relationship, not feel like you're invading or stealing something, whether it's a tree or a steel mill. You generate bad vibrations if you steal something, if instead of asking yourself "what can I bring to this?" you ask yourself "what could I possibly get out of it?" My work is about the trace, the meaning, the imprint. Photographing a place is like sharing a meal with friends. You see, over time, how they change. Sometimes a place doesn't change, but I've changed. Is a friendship ever over? It's the same with the places I photograph." Michael Kenna
