Joseph SIMA: Visions du monde retrouvé - Unpublished watercolors and paintings This book was published to coincide with the summer exhibition at the Musée de l'Hospice Saint-Roch in Issoudun, bringing together an exceptional group of Sima's works: works on paper from the 1950s from a private collection and a group of paintings from public collections. Joseph Sima (1891-1971) was a Czech-born painter whose dreamlike, poetic work played a decisive role in 20th-century painting. Arriving in Paris in 1921 after studying in Prague, he drew close to the purism of Amédée Ozenfant and Le Corbusier, and had fruitful exchanges with Piet Mondrian. He rubbed shoulders with the poets René Daumal and Roger Gilbert-Lecomte, with whom he founded the movement and the magazine Grand Jeu, with which he was artistic director. He collaborated on numerous occasions with the poet Pierre Jean Jouve, whose collections he illustrated, and was always close to the Surrealist poets. Although he became a French citizen, he maintained close ties with the Czech avant-garde. His work is dreamlike. Fascinated by landscapes and mythology, the question of light plays an essential role in his work. Around 1925, he was marked by a sensory experience that proved to be a defining event in his painting: the sight of lightning on a stormy night. With the exception of a few portraits of close friends and family, it is in the landscape motif - that of his native Bohemia - that Sima finds most of his inspiration. Her luminous works are characterized by simplicity and, at times, strangeness. From a symbolic painting based on dreams and the imaginary, he gradually shifted, after the war, towards a "materialization of time and space through light".
