Viva roma! from Floris to Rubens & Le Conservatoire des - Lot 142
Viva roma! from Floris to Rubens & Le Conservatoire des arts et métiers Viva roma! the artists' journey to Rome (2018) This new international exhibition, in partnership with the Musée du Louvre, takes us to Rome, which offers itself to us through the eyes of European painters. The exhibition takes us in the footsteps of the "Grand Tour" enthusiasts, ancestors of today's tourists, who traveled to further their education, but also artists, art lovers and collectors. Following on from the success of the inaugural exhibition En plein air, this is a second original exhibition of international scope, once again produced in partnership with the Louvre Museum. It takes visitors to the heart of Rome to discover the fascination of European artists for this mythical city. 170 works from the Louvre and over 40 foreign institutions, including the Getty Museum in Los Angeles, the Museum of Fine Arts in San Francisco, the Thorvaldsen Museum in Copenhagen,... From the 17th to the 20th century, the "journey to Rome" was an inexhaustible source of inspiration, dominated by the relationship with works of art from Antiquity. The ancient capital of the Roman Empire exerted a powerful seductive power, through its monuments such as the Colosseum, its nearby sites (Pompeii, Herculaneum) and its fantasized art of ideal beauty, inherited from the Greeks. The exhibition addresses the singularity of a city of contrasts and pleasures, in the light of the South: its various districts, palaces, artists' studios, the feverish life of the population, and even its gastronomy, have given new colors to art in Europe. A catalog and an issue of the magazine Liege.museum will report, through text and images, on this major exhibition, which is sure to interest all audiences. FROM FLORIS TO RUBENS (2016) This book presents a selection of eighty-seven drawings by Flemish and Dutch masters from the 16th and early 17th centuries. Assembled by a demanding and passionate collector, these sheets illustrate one of the most fertile and exciting periods in the history of drawing. In addition to projects for engravings, paintings, stained glass and tapestries sketched by the greatest masters, such as Frans Floris and Peter Paul Rubens, there are sublime figure studies and charming landscapes created with the same talent by contemporaries such as Hendrick van Balen, Cornelis de Vos and Adriaen Frans Boudewijns. Most of these drawings are presented to the public for the first time. the conservatoire des arts et métiers: from the origins to the end of the restoration 1794-1830 (2018) Founded in 1794 at the suggestion of Abbé Grégoire, the Conservatoire national des arts et métiers today occupies a prime position in the national landscape of higher education. A public scientific, cultural and professional establishment with grand établissement status, it is a leader in lifelong vocational training, welcoming over eighty thousand students to its Paris teaching center and its many associated regional centers. The Musée des arts et métiers, part of Cnam, houses an exceptional collection of machines, models, photographs and drawings illustrating the history of innovation. Its mission is to preserve and enhance this national heritage, and to contribute to the development of historical research and scientific and technical cultural training. After La Deuxième Fille de Cluny. Grandeurs et misères de Saint-Martin-des-Champs (Glénat/Le Cnam, 2012), which explores some 800 years of "pre-Cnam" history, Le Conservatoire des Arts et Métiers, des origines à la fin de la Restauration (1794-1830) (hereinafter referred to as "the Book") sets out to analyze the establishment's early years, during which the Conservatoire experienced some of the most important moments in its history: installation in the former priory of Saint-Martin-des-Champs; creation of the first teaching chairs; organization of evening classes. Abundantly illustrated with nearly four hundred detailed notes, this volume includes several chronological appendices, a detailed bibliography and a vast onomastic index. While it reads like a novel with often unexpected episodes, it is also a highly accurate tool, constituting the first sum ever written on the general history of the Conservatoire des arts et métiers. The author, Alain Mercier, is in charge of historical research at the Musée des arts et métiers. He has produced numerous publications designed to raise awareness not only of the museum's exceptional heritage, but also of the history of the Conservatoire national des arts et métiers.
