Le Vitrail dans la demeure / Les Jean Martin de la Piscine / Dey you lane / James Casebere LE VITRAIL DANS LA DEMEURE: XVIIIE COLLOQUE DU CORPUS VITREARUM TROYES (4-8 JUILLET 2016) Glass decoration in the home is an area of research often considered secondary. However, documents mentioning glazing and glazed decoration in private buildings are abundant, and the works listed for the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, as well as for the 19th and 20th centuries, merit careful study, on a par with monumental religious stained-glass windows. Contributing to the transformation of our view of stained glass by integrating its multiple manifestations in the home, actively searching for works that are often difficult to recognize, and bringing together the work already carried out in the member countries of the Corpus Vitrearum has proved to be a promising challenge. Een rijk gevuld programma v JEAN MARTIN DE LA PISCINE (2016) The son of blue-collar workers, Lyon-born Jean Martin (1911-1996) was a self-taught artist who developed an assiduous practice of drawing and painting, until his decisive encounter in the 1920s with painter Lucien Féchant and sculptor Georges Salendre. He first exhibited at the Salon d'Automne in 1933, at the Salon du Sud-Est from 1934, and at the Salon des Indépendants in Paris from 1935. In 1938, he exhibited at the Galerie Billiet-Vorms in Paris, alongside Georges Rohner and Jean Lasne, with the Nouvelle Génération group, the final manifestation of the "Forces Nouvelles", created around art critic Henri Héraut in 1935. During the Occupation, Jean Martin exhibited regularly at his friend Marcel Michaud's Folklore gallery in Lyon and at the Jouvène gallery in Marseille, then, from 1945 to 1947, at Katia Granoff's gallery in Paris. In 1940, together with Marc Barbezat, he took part in the birth of the avant-garde magazine L'Arbalète, for which he designed the front cover. In 1946, he moved to Paris and worked for theater and television. In the early 1950s, he turned definitively to the medieval tradition, working in tempera and creating images imbued with Romanesque and Byzantine ideals, close to surrealist or symbolist inspiration. He opened the A.T.C. (Art et Tradition Chrétienne) gallery on rue Saint-Sulpice, where he promoted painters, sculptors, potters, coppersmiths and weavers, and played an important role in the revival of sacred art in France at the time of Reconstruction.
