Portraits in hunting costume Portraits in hunting costume (2010)
For as long as painting has been interested in the art of portraiture, it has produced a vast number of images of hunters, including many masterpieces of Western art (Velasquez, Goya, Desportes, Nattier, Gainsborough, Stubbs, Boldini...). Whether they are venerators, falconers or marksmen, the models seem eager to be portrayed in garb that evokes an activity they love. By posing in hunting attire, are they simply looking for a way to prolong the fleeting pleasure of the catch? Or does the costume signify an aspect of the model's personality that eludes facial features? Depending on the era and the circumstances, hunting attire may be perceived as a manifestation of power, as the distinguishing mark of an elite or a social community. It can also help define the character of the person portrayed, specifying his moral qualities, his aptitude for leadership or social life. The author sets out to dismantle the codes and relate the evolution of these images to that of the hunting practices that inspired them.
