Himalayan Masks / Himalayan Masquerades / Himalayan Eclipse Himalayan Masks (2007) The Himalayan world is the cradle of many mystical and religious traditions, manifested in a wide variety of forms. The mask has retained all its importance. Omnipresent in the 'cham dances performed by Tibetan Buddhist monks in strict compliance with the rules, indispensable for the theatrical staging of the great Hindu myths in southern Nepal, and an essential part of the Newar dances of the Kathmandu valley, the mask is designed to capture the imagination of spectators and edify the faithful, by giving them a glimpse of the concrete manifestation of the gods and demons of their invisible environment. Another approach is to discover so-called primitive or tribal masks. Drawn from major Western collections, the masks presented in this book offer a broad panorama of the highly diverse production of Himalayan artists. Masquerades in the Himalayas: the virtues of laughter (2014) Joyful skeletons and raised corpses, saucy old men and pregnant old women, jesters with exaggerated virility and ridiculous ascetics, rites of exorcism and theatrical comedians, this book written by four hands gives these masked or cloaked performances the attention they deserve. Is it possible to understand Himalayan festivals and rituals without taking into account the masquerades, hullabaloo and grotesque scenes that so often accompany them and give them meaning? Laughter has never been studied in depth in this part of the world. By ignoring it, an important part of the traditions of Himalayan life has been neglected. From the high valleys of Ladakh on the borders of Tibet to the remote plains of Assam, from the little-known villages of Arunachal Pradesh to the bazaars of Nepal, masquerades and their masks, too often associated with mere entertainment, are frontier objects that reveal the unsuspected virtues of derision and obscenity. Eclipse in the Himalayas (2004) "... I climb the steps of the path, barely distinguishing its dazzled stones: each passing day blinds me, but up there, for one last time, time crystallizes into infinite images that melt into me and absorb me..." ...Day after day, the author advances along the path; from village to bivouac, she continues her ascent with no other goal than the light she loses a little more each day. Blind and dazzled, she watches for the inner birth of images born of her encounter with the signs that populate the infinite landscape. bel ensemble
