François Depeaux, Versailles Revival, Le Voyage des Musiciens & Le renouveau de la Passion François Depeaux: Collector of the Impressionists (2020)
Throughout his life, François Depeaux (1853-1920) was intensely passionate about Impressionism, collecting nearly 600 works, including more than 60 Sisleys and 20 Monets, as well as Renoirs, Toulouse-Lautrec, Pissarros and a large group of works by the Rouen School. A Rouen entrepreneur and philanthropist, François Depeaux wrote some of the finest pages in the history of the city, whose development he ardently promoted. The accession of the Depeaux donation to the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Rouen in 1909 was a major event for Impressionism. This catalog, published to coincide with the first exhibition devoted to François Depeaux, provides an insight into the life and work of an extraordinary personality, and the scope of a collection that is probably one of the richest of all time, now dispersed in museums around the world.
Versailles Revival: 1867-1937 (2019)
At the end of the 19th century, the Château de Versailles made a spectacular comeback. As it once again became a national symbol and the scene of political events, nostalgia for its former splendor inspired literature, art and fashion. The splendor of Versailles, the poetry of its gardens, the ghosts of the Sun King and Marie-Antoinette were all part of the dreams of the Belle Epoque and the Roaring Twenties. It was also the time when the palace embarked on a vast project of restoration and refurnishing, sparking passionate debates that are still going on today.
Le Voyage des Musiciens: Two centuries of Franco-Greek exchanges (2021)
From the Greek melodies of Maurice Ravel to the ballets of Maurice Béjart, from the nostalgic romances of Attic to the sunny songs of Georges Moustaki, from popular traditions to contemporary creations, Franco-Greek musical relations have been exceptionally rich over the last two centuries. This book retraces this often little-known history, evoking the artists who have written it, from the most famous personalities - Maria Callas, Camille Saint-Saëns, Iannis Xenakis, Mélina Mercouri, Mikis Théodorakis, Nana Mouskouri - to the humblest performers, island musicians or soldiers in military bands. Through rare documents and numerous photographs by Henri Cartier-Bresson, Kostas Balafas, Willy Ronis, Nikos Economopoulos, Nelly's and Jacques Lacarrière, readers will be taken on a voyage of images and music, to discover this shared history of infinite resonance.
Le renouveau de la Passion: La sculpture religieuse entre Chartres et Paris autour de 1540 (2020)
In the early 1540s, the arts in France experienced an upheaval that marked the beginning of a new period sometimes referred to as the "Classical Renaissance". Alongside royal commissions, large-scale religious sculpture played a major role in this evolution. In Chartres, a little-known artist, François Marchand, brought to life the great episodes in the life of the Virgin Mary, as well as of St. Peter and St. Paul, with virtuoso and passionate skill. Following Raphael's example, he invented a new type of bas-relief to rival that of Antiquity. In Paris, Jean Goujon created one of the most emblematic works of the French Renaissance, where an almost graphic sense of line triumphs. These exceptional sculptures are illuminated by a particularly fertile artistic context. Magnified by recent restorations, they are once again open to contemplation and wonder.
