JOSEF KOUDELKA 1938- - Lot 104
JOSEF KOUDELKA 1938- "Gitans, la fin du voyage", Delpire éditeur, 1975. Rare original French edition. Rare original French edition; introduction by R.D.; afterword by Willy Guy; 60 photographs by Josef Koudelka. Josef Koudelka's photographs of gypsies were published by Robert Delpire in 1975 in this book, which would become legendary and would not be republished for a very long time. Robert Delpire writes in his text "Josef ou la fureur de voir" (Josef or the fury of seeing): in the very fixity of the characters that Josef questions and who question him, there is a kind of tension, a shudder, a muffled rumor of lively blood suddenly contained. It's not so much the provisional nature of immobility, the suspended time inherent in the instantaneous, it's the feeling that this precarious immutability is only a surface phenomenon. Beneath each of these tanned, hairless skins, the ice of all fears slips silently by. Rooted like dry trees inside these bare white walls, the men trace the lines, indicate the masses of a statistically geometric order. Prisoners of their naive attention to the photographic event, they are both witnesses and actors in their own presence. Whether they are watching over a murder victim, displaying their derisory treasures or showing off for Josef in the ironic ostentation of accepted destitution, they give the image its weight of classicism and tradition. In-4 (30 x 27.5 cm) Fine copy; dust jacket missing.
